The role of general nuclear medicine in breast cancer

چکیده
The rising incidence of breast cancer worldwide has prompted many improvements to current care. Routine nuclear medicine is a major contributor to a full gamut of clinical studies such as early lesion detection and stratification; guiding, monitoring, and predicting response to therapy; and monitoring progression, recurrence or metastases. Developments in instrumentation such as the high-resolution dedicated breast device coupled with the diagnostic versatility of conventional cameras have reinserted nuclear medicine as a valuable tool in the broader clinical setting. This review outlines the role of general nuclear medicine, concluding that targeted radiopharmaceuticals and versatile instrumentation position nuclear medicine as a powerful modality for patients with breast cancer.

The role of 99mTc-MIBI scientimammography in diagnosis of breast cancer
Scientimammography (SMM) is a new non-invasive method of imaging breast tumors which in various studies the overall sensitivity of 83%-95.8% and specificity of 52%-95% is reported. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the usefullness of 99mTc-MIBI SMM in our environment in detecting breast cancer and in reducing the rate of biopsy. 65 patients aged 23-70 years were included in this st...
متن کاملRole of pathologic prognostic factors in breast cancer patients with isolated bone metastasis and relationship between SUVmax and prognostic factors
Introduction: 18F-FDG PET/CT provides very effective results in detecting metastases of breast cancer. In our study, we investigated the relationship between maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax) and prognostic pathologic factors in breast cancer cases with isolated bone metastasis and whether there was any difference in terms of prognostic pathologic factors betwee...
متن کاملBreast cancer imaging: a new role of Tc-99m sestamibi prone scintimammography for diagnosisof breast cancer
Mammography remians the procedure of choice in screening asymptomatic women for breast cancer. However, in patients with symptoms, other types of imaging play an important role in the detection of malignancies. The high cost and lack of availability of PET and MRI largely precludes the use in this patient population. TI-201 is nbt the imaging agent of choice because of its wash-out and redistri...
متن کاملRadiotracer re-injection in case of sentinel node non-visualization in a breast cancer patient
We reported a 35 year old breast cancer patient who was referred to our nuclear medicine department for sentinel node mapping. She was planned to undergo mastectomy and lymphatic mapping. A dose of Tc-99m Phytate was injection in the peri-areolar region in an intra-dermal fashion. Two hours post-injection no sentinel node was visible in the axilla. Due to a high liver uptake, inadvertent intra-...
متن کاملDynamic lymphoscintigraphy in breast cancer patients: feasibility and added value
Introduction: Lymphoscintigraphy is imaging of the lymphatic system and has been integrated into the sentinel node mapping procedures. Lymphoscintigraphy usually encompasses early or delayed static images. However, immediate dynamic imaging of the lymphatic basins and tumors has also been used as an adjunct lymphoscintigraphy imaging. The aim of this study was ...
متن کاملRadiation-induced myocardial perfusion abnormalities in breast cancer patients following external beam radiation therapy
Objective(s): Radiation therapy for breast cancer can induce myocardial capillary injury and increase cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. A prospective cohort was conducted to study the prevalence of myocardial perfusion abnormalities following radiation therapy of left-sided breast cancer patients as compared to those with right–sided cancer. Methods: To minimize potential confounding fact...
